สุนัขจรจัดหรือถูกทอดทิ้งกำลังกลายเป็นปัญหาสังคมอยู่ในขณะนี้ เป็นผลลัพธ์จากการขาดความรับผิดชอบของคนนำสุนัขไปปล่อยทิ้งให้เป็นภาระของสังคมจึงควรที่จะต้องหาทางแก้ไขโดยไม่สร้างบาปกรรมหรือเพิ่มความเดือดร้อนให้แก่สัตว์รวมทั้งคนมากกว่าที่เป็นอยู่ การกำจัดสุนัขไม่ได้ช่วยแก้ปัญหา ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากทุกครั้งที่มีการกำจัดสุนัขออกไปจากบริเวณนั้นก็จะมีสุนัขกลุ่มใหม่เข้ามาแทนที่อยู่เสมอตราบใดที่ยังมีแหล่งขยะเศษอาหารซึ่งเป็นบ่อเกิดให้สุนัขเหล่านี้มีชีวิตและมีการแพร่พันธุ์ปัญหาสุนัขจรจัดจึงสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงการขาดความรู้ ความเข้าใจ ความรับผิดของหน่วยงานของรัฐและประชาชน

องค์การอนามัยโลกและองค์กรป้องกันสัตว์แห่งโลก (WSPA, World Society for prevention of animals) สรุปว่าการทำหมันจะต้องทำร่วมกับการให้การศึกษาจึงจะเป็นการแก้ปัญหาแบบยั่งยืน โดยการให้ความรู้เข้าใจในพฤติกรรมและสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ ปลูกฝังความรัก ความเมตตาต่อสัตว์และมีความรับผิดชอบให้กับชุมชนหรือเยาวชน

โครงการสร้างศูนย์การเรียนรู้และปลูกฝังความเมตตาโดยใช้สัตว์เป็นโมเดล ควบคู่กับการทำหมัน จึงเป็นทางออกของการแก้ปัญหาแบบยั่งยืน โดยจะใช้เป็นศูนย์ให้ความรู้ภาคปฏิบัติและการปลูกฝังความเมตตาให้กับเยาวชนเด็กนักเรียนและอาสาสมัครเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมในการช่วยเหลือสัตว์ตลอดจนเป็นที่ฝึกสุนัขจรจัดเพื่อนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ต่อไปในศูนย์ฯนี้ยังมีคลินิครักษาสัตว์ (after care and half way house)อยู่ภายในเพื่อรักษาสัตว์เจ็บป่วยที่ด้อยโอกาส หรือรอการรับอุปการะ อีกทั้งยังเป็นสถานที่ที่ใช้ในการพักฟื้นสุนัขหลังการผ่าตัด ทำหมัน ก่อนที่จะถูกนำกลับไปอยู่ในสถานที่เดิมเพื่อมิให้มีการติดเชื้อ แผลแตก หรือปัญหาอื่น ๆ ตามมา ส่วนสุนัขจรจัดที่ได้รับบาดเจ็บ พิการ ที่ไม่สามารถมีชีวิตอยู่ได้ตามธรรมชาติอีกต่อไป จำเป็นต้องหาผู้ดูแลอุปการะ จะต้องมีที่พักพิงชั่วคราวจนกว่าจะมีผู้รับไปเลี้ยง โดยมีสัตวแพทย์และผู้ช่วยประจำ รวมทั้งความร่วมมือกับสัตวแพทย์อาสาสมัครจากต่างประเทศหมุนเวียนเข้าช่วยในโครงการนี้เป็นระยะ

วัตถุประสงค์

• สร้างศูนย์การเรียนรู้และปลูกฝังความเมตตาโดยใช้สัตว์เป็นโมเดล
• สร้างการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนในการแก้ปัญหาสุขอนามัยแวดล้อมที่มีผลกระทบถึงชุมชน
• เป็นโครงการตัวอย่างแห่งแรกในประเทศไทยเพื่อให้จังหวัดต่างๆได้มาศึกษาเรียนรู้
• การแก้ปัญหาสุนัขแบบยั่งยืนด้วยวิถีแห่งพุทธ

Lanna Dog Center for Humane Education and Animal Welfare

Lanna Dog Center for Humane Education and Animal Welfare regards education as the most important tool for change. We are convinced that education in compassion and the care of animals will help to develop a change in attitude and will make people understand and be more responsible towards their fellow men, animals, and the environment.

The Center is based on the model of a German animal shelter. It is situated in beautiful natural surroundings, ideal for recreation or relaxation. It is designed to facilitate visits from senior citizens and disabled people. Families can come to picnic on weekends, walk and play with the dogs. They are also very welcome as volunteers to help us take care of the animals and at the same time, to learn about animal behaviour and the environment. Volunteers will not only gain the benefit of giving, receiving and sharing, they will also learn to understand more about the needs of animals and how humans society can sometimes makes them suffer.

In the Center, we will provide a library as well as educational videos and films on animals. The area can also be used for trainings, meetings, workshops, seminars etc. The Center also provides a clinic for the sterilization of roaming and stray dogs and cats, as well as a “nursing area” for very sick ownerless dogs. It will also be used to give extra training opportunities to veterinary students. We welcome volunteers from both Thailand and abroad to visit and work in the Center.

There are also future plans to move in the direction of animal assisted therapy. We will try  to turn our stray dogs into Service Dogs.

Above all, the Center belongs to the citizens of Chiang Mai and we welcome them to make full use of our lovely woods and friendly dogs.

Future activities and services at the Lanna Dog Humane Education Center

• Teaching Humane Education to schoolchildren will enable them to show compassion and responsibility towards all living beings. School classes will be invited to visit the Center and work with disabled, abandoned and stray dogs, so as the children can understand more about animal behaviour and welfare.

• The services at the Center are designed for use by able as well as disabled people. In this way, LDR hopes to give senior and disabled people the opportunity to participate in all activities alongside young and able bodied people. This will encourage the general public to respect and value the old and handicapped.

• We want to encourage young people to have an altruistic attitude and create volunteerism and help society. Young people can come to help at the Center in order to learn and, later, help their own communities.

• We would like the surroundings of the Center to be beautified and used as an area for relaxation and family activities, free of charge, possibly combining with voluntary work.  

• LDR will hold exhibitions and present educational media to the public to encourage responsible pet ownership. Communities should protect their dogs from the brutal thieves of the meat market. People should work together to discourage the eating of dogs and learn the proper attitudes towards stray dog management without using violence.

• We will hold classes in basic dog training and dog behaviour and try to convince the public that a well trained and balanced dog can live much more harmoniously in human society.

• We will offer sterilization and rabies vaccination at prices affordable even to the poor, and free services for the strays in the community and the temples in the area. Proceeds from this service will be used to help sick strays in the community.

• LDR will provide advice and help with dog problems wherever possible. It will regularly conduct seminars on humane stray dog management by inviting monks, teachers and community leaders to join group discussions and workshops. We hope that these sessions will act as role models and help to move education on animal welfare into the curricula of the Thai school system.
